As is common for large ground-based telescopes in the US, the LSST is a public-private project. Private support leverages even larger federal support. This has been true even for facilities where the data was not made public immediately. LSST breaks with that tradition because the data and data products from LSST are immediately public, without a proprietary time period. Thus, private funding for LSST supports open access.

The LSST is a public-private project , and relies on private contributions from individuals and foundations with a keen interest in applying novel technology to the broad range of science and public outreach. The LSST Corporation appreciates your interest in the LSST and values your comments, questions and suggestions. Private donations can play an important enabling role in helping this project get going as the project approval process makes its way through the federal government.
